Collection highlights
Explore some of the remarkable and diverse highlights of our nationally important collection of modern British art, including key works by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.
The Hepworth Wakefield cares for more than 5,000 artworks in the Wakefield Permanent Art Collection. The gallery builds on a pioneering reputation, as the former Wakefield Art Gallery, established in 1934, became one of the most forward-thinking galleries of its time, establishing a national reputation for its progressive collecting policy and ground-breaking exhibitions.
Founded with gifts from local industrialists, Wakefield Art Gallery supported and collected works by some of the most significant and avant-garde British artists of the twentieth century, including Hepworth and Moore, both born in the Wakefield district. The Hepworth Wakefield continues this collecting tradition, and supports local and international artists through its exhibitions, learning and public programmes.
