Born in Bradford, Hockney made regular visits as a student at Bradford College of Art to the contemporary art exhibitions held at the former Wakefield Art Gallery.

His early exposure to avant-garde artistic practice was furthered by studying at the Royal College of Art in the early 1960s, where he became part of a new generation of contemporary British painters.

This print pays homage to one of Hockney’s heroes, a young Pablo Picasso, in which the artist is literally put onto a pedestal. The work reveals Hockney’s mastery of the etching medium and his consummate draughtsmanship.
