Surrealism: Creative Collage
1hr 50min artist-led workshop for KS1 - KS4
Inspired by our special exhibition Forbidden Territories: 100 Years of Surreal Landscapes students will explore Surrealism and create imaginative creatures and landscapes using collage and printmaking techniques.
Session overview
During this workshop students will explore Surrealism in our exciting new exhibition Forbidden Territories: 100 Years of Surreal Landscapes. Working with local artist Rachel Sim, they will discover the strange and curious landscapes that surrealist artists have created over the last 100 years, including works by Max Ernst, Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Wael Shawky and Leonora Carrington.
Inspired by the atmosphere created in the surreal landscapes, students will make their own mini fold out landscapes. They’ll then create playful surreal creatures and animals using shapes, forms and colours they can see in the artworks.
In the studios pupils will use vocab words to inspire surreal landscape collages. Laying shapes, texture and colour they’ll then add details using simple printmaking techniques to create strange worlds.
Take back to school
Students will each create their own individual mini-landscape drawings, surreal creatures and collaged landscapes.
“The children had a wonderful time! The workshop was so full of wonderful activities to help the pupils explore surrealism. It’s also helped me to consider our art curriculum and how to allow the children to be more free and creative in their choices. We loved it, thank you!” Sandal Magna Community Academy
