This workshop is based on a real art project by artist Helen Chadwick and school children in Newcastle in 1983. Children made life-sized self-portraits using collage and drawings to express who they were and how they saw themselves.
At the same time, Helen Chadwick was working on her own self-portrait—Ego Geometria Sum 1983, which you can see in the exhibition. Just like the children, she used her body and experiences to tell a story through art.
In the galleries
Visit Ego Geometria Sum (1983) in the Helen Chadwick: Life Pleasures exhibition, exploring the shapes, ideas and stories in this work of art.
In the Clore Learning studios
Work together with your family to draw the outline of your body onto a large piece of paper.
Then college and draw with colourful art materials to tell the story of you!

Note for parents:
Helen Chadwick explored the human body using unusual materials in surprising ways. Her work encourages us to think about how we feel and how we experience the world.
Some of the art in this exhibition includes nudity or references difficult topics like sexual violence. It may lead to big questions or conversations.
To help you enjoy your visit, we’ve focussed on artworks that connect with children’s own experiences or explore interesting making techniques and materials.
If you have any questions or concerns about visiting with a family please email learning@hepworthwakefield.org
