We are pleased to present a day of music inspired by Barbara Hepworth’s sculptures, composed and performed by Jazz music students at Leeds Conservatoire, who will play a range of instruments in short performances throughout the day.
Performances will respond to a specific artwork or series of works and will take place in different locations throughout the Barbara Hepworth: Art & Life exhibition.
The project has been developed in collaboration with Jamil Sherrif, Programme Leader (Jazz) at Leeds Conservatoire and will be led by Mark Sanders, Senior Lecturer (Jazz), who will also perform at the event.
About the performers
As an improvising musician, Sanders plays with leading musicians from around the world. He played festivals around Europe with Christian Marclay with his works Everyday and Screenplay and performed as a soloist for Marclay’s 2015 exhibition at The White Cube Gallery, London.
Sanders performed as an improvising soloist for artist Henrik Hakensen`s film The End alongside Orchestras in Glasgow, Monte Carlo and Sydney. He has performed in multimedia projects including Elaine Michener’s Sweet Tooth, Jennifer Walshe & Brian Irvine’s 13 Vices and Sarah Sarhandi’s Both Universe. With composer/ saxophonist John Butcher he has performed the piece Tarab Cuts at The Holland Festival, and festivals in London, Barcelona and Rio De Janeiro.
A list of participating student performers will be announced soon.
