Brunch Talk and Tour: In the Garden artists and Katy Merrington

Sun 8 May 2022, 10.30am - 11.30am

Wakefield-based artists Helen Riddle, Helen Thomas and Tony Wade give an introduction to their work in our café exhibition In the Garden, which will be followed by tour of The Hepworth Wakefield Garden by our Cultural Gardener Katy Merrington.

The works in the exhibition were created through regular visits to the garden as it came into bloom during the Covid-19 pandemic. Katy will discuss the planting depicted in the artists’ works as part of an introduction to Tom Stuart-Smith’s garden design, and will describe its current transition from winter to spring planting.

If you would like to purchase coffee or brunch prior to the talk starting, The Hepworth Wakefield Café is open from 10am.

This talk and tour forms part of Gathering Ground, a series of events inspired by The Hepworth Wakefield Garden and our riverside location.

From gardening, growing and food to wellbeing, wildlife and waterways, Gathering Ground invites communal reflection upon the natural world in an urban setting and the ways in which we can connect with and care for it.

About the artists

Tony Wade is a visual artist interested in the emotional impact landscapes can have on people, through paintings, sculpture, and installations.

Textile artist Helen Riddle creates a range of felted pieces using a combination of wet felting, needle felting and hand and free motion embroidery.

Helen Thomas works predominantly with painting and drawing to create responses to plants in the environment. Helen’s practice includes field and studio work, alongside educational and collaborative projects.

On display in The Hepworth Wakefield Café until 25 September, In The Garden brings together work by Sarah Abbott, Clare Curtis, Studio Wald, who have captured The Hepworth Wakefield Garden in their work.
