Marking 15 years since The Hepworth Wakefield opened, internationally renowned architect Sir David Chipperfield returns to the gallery for a special evening of conversation.

In discussion with the gallery’s Executive Director Olivia Colling, David will reflect on the inspirations behind the building’s distinctive form, its relationship to the River Calder and the industrial heritage of Wakefield, and the process of creating one of the UK’s most significant cultural buildings of recent decades. He will also discuss the challenges of delivering another major public gallery, Turner Contemporary in Margate, in the same year.

David will also reflect on the role that architecture can play in shaping civic identity and supporting cultural life. Connecting his experience in Wakefield to his current work with Fundación RIA, a non-profit initiative in the Spanish region of Galicia, he will discuss the connections between architecture, landscape, culture and community, and how long-term thinking about place can help strengthen the resilience and vitality of regions.
