New work by Veronica Ryan

22 Nov 2017

on display at The Hepworth Wakefield from 23 November 2017

Co-commissioned by The Art House and The Hepworth Wakefield, Montserrat-born British artist Veronica Ryan has created a new work in response to masterpieces by Barbara Hepworth held our Collection.

This new work Particles was developed as part of The Art House Change Makers residency programme with support from the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and The Hepworth Wakefield. The Hepworth Wakefield will display this mixed media sculpture within our Masterpieces by Barbara Hepworth exhibition from 23 November 2017.

Nicola Freeman, Director of Engagement & Learning at The Hepworth Wakefield said: ’It has been exciting to see Ryan re-engage with Hepworth’s work during her residency at The Art House, and we look forward to the new conversations her commission will provoke.’

Serving as Ryan’s first solo show in Britain for 15 years, The Art House’s exhibition Salvages, presents new work that continues an on-going exploration of notions of place and the stacking and layering of memories and narratives.

In 2000, Ryan completed a residency at Tate St Ives, where she worked in the former studio of Barbara Hepworth and used marble gifted by the Hepworth Estate. During her residency at The Art House, Ryan had the opportunity to re-examine her connection with Wakefield-born Barbara Hepworth.
