Born Two Metres Apart: A Heartbeat in Confinement by Matty Freeman
16 Sep 2021
Matty Freeman's Born Two Metres Apart: A Heartbeat in Confinement (2021) is the result of one of our Youth Artist Residencies. The residency supports young people in our youth programme to further develop their personal skills, resilience and self-confidence through creative, in-depth art experiences.
Throughout her residency Matty was mentored by local filmmaker Nick Singleton to experiment with the use of photography, film and sound in her creative practice. She has used these mediums to playfully explore personal narratives and interests while developing her film and audio editing skills to complete an Arts Award qualification.
From behind the camera Matty explores her experience of 2020. This series of still and moving images illustrates the impact of the pandemic, her own mental health and a complex journey into motherhood.
An exhibition of Matty’s work is currently on display at The Ridings Centre, Wakefield until the end of October 2021, supported by Paul Hamlyn Foundation and the Art House, Wakefield.
