Food Waste
Since August 2022, the café has had weekly food waste collections through ReFood, which is based in Doncaster.
ReFood filter what we send to them and the food is processed to create Biogas for fuel and fertiliser for soil. These products are then put back into the system to produce renewable energy and to grow more crops.
So far this has fit neatly into our operations and the staff have been excellent at complying with the guidelines we have for what we can or cannot put into the food waste stream.
By mid-September 2022, we were pleased to see the impact we have made through a simple change. After 5 weeks, 105.30 KW hours of energy was produced through our waste alone, this is then fed back into the National Grid. As well as 0.18 tonnes of CO2 saved by displacement of fossil fuels and through diverting waste from landfill.
We have also noticed a drop in the amount of rubbish we are now sending to general waste which is positive with regards to our climate impact as well as reducing the impact the cafe specifically has on the waste of the building as a whole.
Ideally, we would aim to send out as little waste as possible to further reduce our environmental impact as well as making sure we use as much produce as we can but with this new system, we can feel confident that it is not a futile gesture.
