Teacher CPD: Exploring Sketchbooks Outside

Tues 8 Oct, 4 - 5.45pm, FREE (registration and refreshments from 3.45pm)

Join artist Jo Blaker for a hands-on session at The Hepworth Wakefield that will explore creative ways to use sketchbooks outdoors and strategies that engage all learners in observing their environment.

Inspired by The Hepworth Wakefield Garden, the session will include a range of outdoor activities to look, discover and draw the natural world within your school setting or local area.

During the session Jo will share how sketchbooks can be exciting, accessible and inspiring. She will take you through a series of practical activities that will support you to develop pupils’ confidence using sketchbooks and encourage them to experiment and take risks.

This session is suitable for all primary and secondary teachers, staff and art educators.

Free parking available, on arrival please share your car registration at the Welcome Desk.

All materials and equipment will be provided.

The session will be predominately outdoors so please dress appropriately for the weather.

The session will also give you practical ideas to make the most of the opportunities using sketchbooks outside provides, including different ways to use materials and the health and wellbeing benefits of taking notice and drawing outside.

You’ll also discover ways to create affordable sketchbooks with your pupils so they can playfully record ideas as artists, with suggestions on how to build using sketchbooks into your curriculum.

About Jo Blaker

Jo Blaker’s artistic practice is rooted in finding connection through drawing. By making marks on paper Jo accesses a slower, calmer, more present awareness of the world inside & around her. Since 2019, Jo’s drawing practice has focused upon the sketchbook as a site of expressive, observational work generated through the course of day to day life. Her work combines an holistic approach to drawing with playful material enquiry.

Alongside her personal practice Jo is a regular contributor to the learning programmes of leading cultural venues including Yorkshire Sculpture Park, The Hepworth Wakefield & York Art Gallery and is a guest tutor with London Drawing Group.
