Rachel Knowles

Prints by Wakefield-based artist Rachel Knowles are on display in The Hepworth Wakefield café this summer.

Knowles developed a love of printmaking during her art Foundation course at Jacob Kramer College (now Leeds Arts University) and went on to study Fine Art Printmaking at Loughborough University.

Observational sketching is the starting point for Knowles’ prints. Each design is carefully thought out and planned, usually the result of several drawings of the same subject. She then carves a lino block, printing different colours at different stages of carving to create the finished print.

For inspiration, Knowles looks to the natural environment – the complex relationship between flowers, plants and grasses, the intricate structures and contrasts in colour and size. Some of these prints are inspired by plants in The Hepworth Wakefield Garden.
