Light Up The Hepworth Wakefield

Sat 20, Sun 21, Sat 27, Sun 28 Nov & Sat 4, Sun 5 Dec, 4 - 6pm, FREE

This winter, The Hepworth Wakefield is partnering with students at Backstage Academy, Production Park and Wakefield Council to create a light spectacle on the façade of our iconic building as part of the Light Up festival. Inspired by specially commissioned illustrations created by artist Fredde Lanka, the Light Up will accompany three weekends of Festive Mini Markets, creative family activities and pop-up performances.

The students from Backstage Academy are studying BA (Hons) Live Visual Design & Production as part of an XPLOR project. Based on Production Park in South Kirkby, XPLOR is the world’s first research and innovation centre for entertainment technology and production. Additional support came from Epson, who kindly provided the projector and TechLED, who supported with the lighting and wireless hardware.

The Hepworth Wakefield Garden Café will be open each Light Up weekend until 6pm serving mulled wine and other refreshments. The Hepworth Wakefield shop and gallery café will remain open until 6pm each Saturday and until 5pm on Sundays.

Wakefield’s Light Up festival runs from 17 November to 5 December 2021 at venues across the district.

‘After it felt like Christmas was cancelled last year, we are so delighted to once again be able to host our Christmas market weekends and celebrate the creative talent in Wakefield with our special Light Up commission devised by students at Backstage Academy. We are grateful to Wakefield Council and to Production Park for their support in making our Light Up project possible and promise three spectacular weekends of festive cheer.’ – Simon Wallis, Director of The Hepworth Wakefield

We’re really proud to be working in collaboration with The Hepworth Wakefield. Being part of Light Up is a great opportunity for our students to work on a real-life commercial project – something they regularly do whilst studying BA (Hons) Live Visual Design & Production at Backstage Academy’ – Graham Thorne, Course Leader, BA (Hons) Live Visual Design & Production

The Hepworth Wakefield has been funded as part of Light Up, led by Wakefield Council, from 17 November to 5 December 2021 across the Wakefield district.
