Sarah Lucas gained notoriety for her bold and irreverent style as a so-called ‘Young British Artist’ (YBA) in the 1990s and 2000s. She makes bold sculptural work that uses everyday objects to summon the female form in a way that is both humorous and confrontational. In this work, Nude No. 2, the artist brings together an assemblage of a table, underwear, melons, and a brush to create visual puns and innuendo – a hallmark of Lucas’s practice – which often critiques the objectification of women and the absurdity of cultural gender clichés.
