Daphne Dennison was a Jamaican painter, who lived and worked in London and was a close friend of the artist. She and her late husband Roger Low commissioned Moody’s work Swamp Bird (1963/1).
This portrait was produced during a period when Moody experimented with synthetic materials such as resin and fibreglass. Daphne was made in copper resin, around the same time as works such as Cynthia II (1965).
Photographs exist showing Moody working on the portrait of Daphne in his studio, indicating the importance of the piece within his mid-1960s practice.
The work demonstrates Moody’s shift away from traditional carving toward modern sculptural materials and casting techniques.
