Níamh Donnelly
Níamh Donnelly is a Wakefield-based visual artist concerned with a tender approach to representation, allegory and storytelling through photography. This is largely influenced both by her Irish heritage, and her experiences of being female.
Donnelly uses photography as a means to understand the world around her, and to state her place within it. She is particularly interested in the relationships between spaces, places and people. Her practice revolves around multiple images, and uses pairings and sequences to communicate in a visual language.
About taking part in the project with The Hepworth Wakefield, Donnelly said:
‘Hannah Starkey has made a document of the lived female experience through her practice, making moments that are easy to recognise and connect with. It’s also a body of work which speaks about representation – who is looked at and by whom. Representation plays a huge role within my own practice, so Hannah’s work has always been a strong reference point for me. I was interested in her practice and how her work is formed, as well as how an artist and a gallery might prepare for an upcoming show. What most stood out to me about the project was the opportunity to work with other Yorkshire-based photographers, in the hope that this would be a springboard to future collaborations and support the surge of photography that is happening in Yorkshire at the moment.’
