Emily Ryalls
Emily Ryalls is a Wakefield-based artist working predominantly at the intersection of photography and performance.
Ryalls’ practice is rooted in blurring the lines between a divided photographer/subject relationship, creating meaningful and collaborative works that examine and prompt crucial conversation on the role of photography as a non-exploitive means of co-production and connection. For Ryalls, performing for the camera is an opportunity to reimagine the boundaries of the photograph, exploring the act of live image making and expanding photography outside of a two-dimensional realm.
‘Representation is a huge motivator to my practice, particularly the representation of those identifying as female. Since my undergrad, I’ve connected with Hannah Starkey’s work and saw Hannah’s work acting as a testament and commentary on women’s lived experience within contemporary society – finding new ways to explore or communicate this underpins what I strive for within the production of my own work. What excited me most about working with Hannah Starkey is the valuable opportunity to have an open dialogue about the production of her work, her process, and the journey of her career as a female photographer.’ Emily Ryalls
