Caitlin Hall
Caitlin Hall is a Leeds-based photographer whose work is inspired by tableau, film, fashion and feminism. She draws upon her experiences of being a female, with gender being a prevalent theme within her work.
Hall uses photography as a way to navigate a male-dominated society and explore what it means to be female and the concept of femininity. Her works often represent historic feminine tropes from traditionally voyeuristic male perspectives and transform them into a form of female representation.
Female Untold (2022) is a new series of works that explores what it means to be lost in ‘being female’. Hall explores how gender can influence life experiences, our view of the world and visibility. The series shares how the representation of women is often only seen for beauty, their body, or their biology.
Hall draws on the widely unknown story of Alice Guy-Blaché, a pioneering filmmaker who is acknowledged to be the first director to film a narrative story, and who is passionate about placing women at the forefront of the screen. Using Guy-Blaché as inspiration, Female Untold celebrates female identity, the individual, and their stories through a collection of narrative imagery. Through a series of light box photography works, Hall attempts to share what it means to reframe perspectives and reclaim gender.
‘Hannah Starkey has inspired a generation of photographers and artists, and together with Cindy Sherman, Alex Prager and Julia Fullerton-Batten, is one of the photographers I am most influenced by. Through this project, I’m particularly interested in contributing to The Guide for Girls which will help educate young people on female representation in imagery, which is invaluable and necessary within the ever expanding world of the internet. Young people today are frequently exposed to more harmful imagery and moving image than any other preceding generation; this project will work towards helping them separate the fiction from the non-fiction.’ Caitlin Hall
