Illuminos 'Light Up' The Hepworth Wakefield as part of Wakefield Council festival

18 Nov 2022

The Hepworth Wakefield will be illuminated on Saturday 26 November and Saturday 3 December as part of Wakefield Council’s Light Up festival.

Designed by digital projection artists, Illuminos, the eight-minute-long, looped animation will be projected onto the side of the gallery building from 4pm to 7pm during The Hepworth Wakefield’s Festive Market weekends.

Behind Illuminos are brothers Matt and Rob Vale, who for over 15 years have been creating visually inventive, memorable projection artworks and experiences. Their works range from very large-scale illuminations, such as the one on display at The Hepworth Wakefield, to smaller scale imagery.

Illuminos aim to capture the essence of a place, space or feeling and each piece they create is unique and specific to the location. For The Hepworth Wakefield, Illuminous will draw on the connection between Barbara Hepworth and the Yorkshire landscape that influenced so much of the artist’s work. The projection will bring the gallery building alive with vivid animated content that flows like water across its surfaces. The piece will be guided by soundscapes and spoken word, combining visuals, music and voice.

Olivia Colling, Deputy Director of The Hepworth Wakefield, said:

‘We are extremely grateful to Wakefield Council for enabling us to work with Illuminos to create this site-specific spectacle during our festive market weekends. The market, which will be the first major event in Tileyard North’s new event space, will stay open until 7pm on both Saturday nights and there will be food and drink available, so people can enjoy a very special evening at The Hepworth Wakefield. There is no need to book a ticket to watch the light up, it is free for everyone to enjoy.’

In addition to the light up, during the festive market weekends, there will be a range of performances by groups including Hepworth Brass Band and Grumpah and drop-in family workshops to make festive decorations.

Entry to The Hepworth Wakefield’s festive market is £2 / free for members and under 18s. During the Festive Market weekends, visitors can also purchase a £5 exhibition ticket to experience all that The Hepworth Wakefield has to offer this winter. Entry to the exhibitions is free for Wakefield District residents, Members and under 18s.
