Funding boost for The Hepworth Riverside Gallery Garden

25 Oct 2018

The small capital grant will go towards The Hepworth Wakefield's ambitious Riverside Gallery Garden project.

We’re delighted to share the news that Arts Council England has awarded us a £499,999 Small Capital Grant to help us transform the grassed area adjacent to the gallery into a beautifully landscaped garden, by leading designer Tom Stuart-Smith.

Sarah Maxfield, Area Director North for Arts Council England said: “The Arts Council’s Small Capital Grants help to ensure that organisations have the right buildings and equipment so that they can continue reaching new and broader audiences, to ensure that everyone is able to access arts and culture. I am proud to see that in this round of funding we have been able to give £3.6 million to support 11 organisations from across the North to achieve their ambitions to improve how they deliver arts and culture to our communities.”

This new grant, together with a combination of funds and pledges that we have already secured, takes us to around 75% of our fundraising target. We plan to open the garden next summer to coincide with Yorkshire Sculpture International. It will be free for all to enjoy and will have an exciting programme of outdoor sculpture.

Simon Wallis, Director of The Hepworth Wakefield commented: “It is wonderful news that Arts Council England has awarded this important project such a large grant. The garden will make such a difference to Wakefield Waterfront, vastly enhancing the setting of the gallery and helping us to attract new visitors.”
