2023 Print Fair Prize winner, Babs Pease, to open a new exhibition in The Hepworth Wakefield café

The Prize, open to all artists and collectives participating in The Hepworth Wakefield Print Fair, was devised as part of the gallery’s work to support artists at all stages of their career.

Pease is an artist and printmaker working from a small farm in Perthshire, located in the very heart of central Scotland. She is inspired by the landscape of the surrounding Ochils – a long range of steeply sided, round topped hills, stretching 25 miles from the Firth of Tay to Stirling – and the rich variety of flora and fauna within it. Her designs, which include limited edition prints, greeting cards and home textiles, are hand carved onto linocut blocks and then hand-printed using an antique Victorian relief press.

Rosie Ripley, Head of Commercial at The Hepworth Wakefield, said: ‘We were captivated by Bab’s beautiful depiction of flora and fauna such as soaring starlings and hunting herons. Her seascapes and riverbed scenes are enriched by her thoughtful use of colour. We think Pease’s work will appeal to audiences visiting the gallery and garden and look forward to seeing her exhibition in The Hepworth Wakefield café this March.’

Pease said: ‘I’m really thrilled to have been selected as the Hepworth Print Fair prize winner, particularly as there were so many very talented printmakers taking part. It feels like a real honour to have been chosen.’

Works from the exhibition will be sale in The Hepworth Wakefield shop and online. Pease has also created a limited-edition print of The Hepworth Wakefield, The Waterfront, 2024, sold exclusively in The Hepworth Wakefield shop.
