Stone Carving Workshop at The Hepworth Wakefield

Art & artists >

Masterclass: Stone Carving

10-11 August 2019, 10.30am - 4.15pm

£210 / £157.10 Members

Stone sculptor Melanie Wilks will lead a two-day masterclass, creating unique limestone carvings for your home or garden inspired by Barbara Hepworth’s techniques.

Explore our galleries to discover the legacy of Barbara Hepworth and study the sculptural processes that she pursued when using fine limestone and traditional handheld tools.

Responding to the modernist theme of ‘truth to materials’ explored in our exhibition Yorkshire Sculpture International, participants will initiate sketches and drawings considering sculptural forms and shapes, learning approaches to drawing that can be used to support the development of sculpture. You will then be provided with traditional stone-carving tools such as mallets and chisels to start to carve a block of Limestone.

During the second day, you will sand and refine your limestone sculpture ready to make sure it is ready to take home.

We strongly advise that you wear comfortable, sturdy shoes and clothes you don’t mend getting a bit dusty.
