Join Wakefield-based artist Helen Riddle for a weekend introduction to felting and stitched surface decoration.
Taking inspiration from the designs for The Hepworth Riverside Gallery Garden you will combine wet felting techniques with the opportunity to try your hand at needle felting, using an embellisher, free-motion machine embroidery and hand stitch to create your own garden hanging or decorative panel.
Starting by learning basic wet felting techniques and looking at garden plans and planting schemes, you will plan a wet felting background for your panel, making firm foundation layers and adding colour, shape and movement to the surface layer by incorporating different fibres, half-felts and pre-felts.
During day two you will be guided in free-motion embroidery, hand-stitching, using an embellisher and needle felting, finally bringing these techniques into your final panel.
